Women’s College Hospital officially reopens

Friday, June 10, 2016

Women’s College Hospital in downtown Toronto celebrated its official reopening on June 10, 2016, following five years of construction between July 2010 and September 2015. The province invested nearly $1 billion in the new state-of-the-art facility, which replaces the existing outdated buildings while consolidating most of the services it offers in a single location.

The investment went towards making sure patients have better access to health services, such as an easily accessible hub of programs, clinics and services designed with women’s needs in mind; comprehensive services in breast, thyroid and skin cancers; improved access to medical and diagnostic imaging services; and two more operating rooms. The facility will also be home to the Women’s College Research Institute.

The new facility was designed with environmentally responsible and sustainable features so it can achieve LEED certification in the future.

“The new Women’s College Hospital is a state-of-the-art facility offering a full range of quality health care services within a structure designed to keep the patient experience top-of-mind,” said Dr. Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, in a press release. “Improved access to key services, better patient flow and increased privacy will provide an overall improved patient experience for the women this incredible hospital serves.”

The investment in Women’s College Hospital, Ontario’s only independent, academic, ambulatory care hospital with a primary focus on women, is part of a $12 billion investment the province plans to distribute over 10 years to create modern hospital infrastructure. There are about 35 major projects currently in the planning stages or under construction across the province.
