Plans for new Calgary arena announced

Friday, September 18, 2015

Plans have been announced for a $890-million Calgary arena, fieldhouse-stadium and events centre at the west end of downtown.

Along with the NHL arena, home to the Calgary Flames, and a covered football stadium that will double as a public fieldhouse, the proposed complex will also include a FIFA-sized soccer field and 400-metre indoor track and be convertible to house other sports like volleyball, basketball, tennis and badminton.

The Calgary arena would seat between 19,000 and 20,000 for hockey, while the fieldhouse-stadium will seat 30,000 for football games. It will replace the Scotiabank Saddledome and McMahon Stadium.

Planning, permitting and contamination remediation activities will all have to conclude before construction of the Calgary arena begins. It is anticipated this will take 12-24 months, followed by approximately 36 month to complete construction.
