GTA parking facilities win IPI design awards

Two Toronto-area parking facilities are among the seven winners of the International Parking Institute (IPI) Awards of Excellence. The competition, currently in its 32nd year, honours parking lots and garages that are both visually appealing and environmentally friendly.

“The 2014 winners showcase how significantly parking facilities and operations have been transformed in recent years as a result of advances in technology focused on efficiency and sustainability,” says IPI executive director Shawn Conrad.

The Ajax Go Station, located in the Greater Toronto Area, nabbed the award for Best Design of a Parking Facility with More than 800 Spaces. Meanwhile, the Best Design/Implementation of a Surface Parking Lot award went to a property in the heart of Toronto’s Annex neighbourhood.

The latter was recognized for exceeding the city’s greening standards. The lot, which features a living wall of willows, includes a sustainable storm water management system, high-albedo surface materials and trees to cut urban heat island effect.

Other winners this year include parking facilities in Boston, Los Angeles and Memphis, Tenn. The full list of award winners is:

  • Award for Architecture and Achievement: Park Place (Missoula, Mont.)
  • Best Design of a Parking Space with Fewer than 800 Spaces: City of Santa Monica Parking Structure 6 (Santa Monica, Calif.)
  • Best Design of a Parking Facility with More than 800 Spaces: Ajax GO Station (Ajax, Ont.)
  • Best Design/Implementation of a Surface Parking Lot: 201 Claremont St. Green P + (Toronto)
  • Innovation in a Parking Operation or a Program: LADOT Express Park (Los Angeles)
  • Best Parking Facility Rehabilitation or Restoration: Memphis International Ground Transportation Center (Memphis, Tenn.)
  • Award for New Sustainable Parking and Transportation Facilities Excellence: Boston Common Garage (Boston)
