Trump announces Vancouver hotel-condo tower

Monday, June 24, 2013

The $360-million Arthur Erickson-designed tower in downtown Vancouver will become the city’s first Trump development and the second in Canada.

The Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver will feature 218 luxury condo residences and 147 hotel rooms, with the interior designed by award-winning Box Interior Design.

The luxury hotel will include a champagne lounge, signature restaurant and the city’s first pool bar and nightclub. It will also feature Canada’s first Mar-a-Lago Spa by Ivanka Trump.

When completed, the iconic twisting tower will be 63 storeys, making it the second tallest tower in the city next to the Shangri-La Hotel.

“The architectural twist is not only stunning on the outside but it ensures that each unit has a distinctive view from the inside,” said Holborn Group’s president and CEO, Joo Kim Tiah, during a news conference. “Because of this design, there is a focus on the windows allowing even the smaller units the most expansive views.”

Billionaire businessman Donald Trump agreed that the architecture was unique and important in the organization’s decision to lend its name to the project.

“I think it will be one of the great buildings, not just in Canada, not just in the U.S. (but) anywhere in the world,” said Trump.

While the Trump Organization is lending its brand to, and will operate, the tower, it is not investing in the project’s development.

“The Trump brand is very well-respected, and is synonymous with luxury real estate and hospitality,” said Tiah.

The highrise hotel-condo project stalled during the economic downturn in 2009, but was restarted in April last year. PCL is the general contractor.

Holborn Group is partner and co-developer with TA Global Berhad on the project. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

  1. It is wonderful to see Arthur Erickson’s star rising again in Vancouver. Adding the Trump name to the project may hopefully expose more people internationally to our important West Coast architectural trendsetter. Arthur deserves more recognition and this building may help achieve that.

  2. I’ve always wondered this, but how do typical service providers, such as a contractor or painting company get to be involved in one of these massive constructions? I’m a fan of Trump and see this to be a great fit as Erickson could be an upcoming entrepreneur.
