Global architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) has won a competition to design Sweden’s tallest tower, a residential building in the city of Gothenburg. The company’s project, dubbed The Pole Star, stands at 230 metres and features a twisted element.

“The repetitive structure makes the building easy to produce cost-effectively,” the jury wrote in a statement. “The homes are well-composed with good views and good outdoor spaces in all directions. Overall, the proposal is successful in its endeavor to create an attractive urban setting and a visually striking superstructure.”

A number of other factors influenced the jury’s decision, including function, feasibility, development potential and its visual and aesthetic fit into its urban surroundings and the skyline.

Serneke, the company responsible for the competition, will develop the tower, which is slated for completion in 2019. In addition to the residential tower, the project will incorporate a large urban park and smaller buildings with green roofs.
