NRCan to update commercial energy use survey

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

Natural Resources Canada plans to update its inaugural 2009 Survey of Commercial and Institutional Energy Use, an important resource for policy analysts and energy programs.

“The results of this survey will be used by utilities and provincial governments to develop programs and policies that will improve the energy efficiency of commercial and institutional buildings in Canada,” writes Natural Resources Canada’s Philip B. Jago. “It will support target programs, such as Energy Star Portfolio Manager, providing the basis for updating the Energy Star 1-100 performance scores currently available and for creating new scores for building types not currently eligible for a score.”

Potential respondents will be contacted this summer. Statistics Canada, acting on behalf of the government agency, will then conduct interviews in early 2015 in order to collect energy consumption data from the entire year of 2014.

Introductory packages will be sent out in advance of phone calls to collect information. Many participants will also be asked to complete an in-person survey. Results will likely be released in 2015.
