OPG unveils new Darlington Energy Complex

Thursday, November 6, 2014

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) recently unveiled its newly refurbished Darlington Energy Complex as part of a mid-year project to replace major reactor components and upgrade various plant systems.

Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli was on hand to help showcase a life-sized training model of a nuclar reactor face.

The non-functioning mock-up of a Darlington reactor will help train and test workers regarding challenges, constraints and potential hazards they may face when on the job.

“This training facility is a state-of-the-art resource which will help ensure the refurbishment of the Darlington reactors is completed on time and on budget,” said Chiarelli. “Upgrading and refurbishing our reactors means they will maintain an important role in Ontario’s supply mix for generations to come.”

The renewal will generate thousands of jobs and economic benefits across the province. Since August 2014, OPG has already entered into contracts totaling $1.75 billion with companies in 21 communities.

“This company has a solid track record of success with large-scale, complex nuclear and hydroelectric developments,” said OPG Board Chair Bernard Lord. “We also learned from other refurbishments and adopted the best industry practices from around the world.”

Refurbishment will deliver 30 more years of clean, low-cost, reliable power for Ontario.
