A majority of China’s provinces now boast LEED projects, says a report from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), which deems mainland China one of the largest markets in the world for LEED green building activity.

“The market for green building in Greater China has seen extraordinary growth since its first LEED project earned certification in 2005,” says USGBC chief operating officer Mahesh Ramanujam. “As the momentum overseas continues in the green building industry, USGBC aims to transform the global built environment.”

There are currently 1,961 LEED registered and certified projects in the world’s most populous country. The USGBC has also announced it will waive LEED certification fees for the first trio of LEED v4 Platinum projects in mainland China. The country is already home to the first such building, Beijing’s Haworth Showroom, which was completed in 2013.

Nevertheless, Canada has more LEED certified and registered projects.
