Inglewood House for seniors opens in Calgary

Monday, July 21, 2014

The Inglewood House for seniors, located at 1300 8th Avenue in Southeast Calgary, recently opened its doors to residents two years after construction began. The building, which includes 43 affordable studio and one-bedroom apartments, was developed through a joint contribution of $4.7 million from the governments of Canada and Alberta and $10,000 from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

The official opening of Inglewood House, which was attended by city officials and Naheed Nenshi, Mayor of Calgary, was celebrated on July 10.

Government funding for the project was provided through Canada’s Economic Action Plan – Housing for Low-Income Seniors.

“The Government of Alberta’s continued investment in affordable housing ensures seniors will be able to live close to family and friends in the communities they worked so hard to build,” says Greg Weadick, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Inglewood House makes a wonderful addition to the vibrant and historic community of Inglewood, and our government is delighted that seniors have an option for safe, affordable housing for many years to come in one of Calgary’s most revered communities.”

Inglewood House is a smoke-free facility that features open unit designs, an advanced heating and ventilation system, modern kitchens with designer cabinetry and accessible unit features such as grab bars and walk-in showers. The building has five units that are specifically designed for wheelchair accessibility.
