GTA high-rise a first with geoexchange system

Wednesday, April 9, 2014

The On The Go Mimico condo project will become the first high-rise in Toronto to employ an integrated geoexchange cogeneration heating, cooling and hydro system. The 27-storey building is a joint development between Stanton Renaissance and television host Mike Holmes’ Holmes Approved Homes program.

The condominium will be located adjacent to the Mimico GO train station on Royal York Avenue. Using the geoexchange cogeneration heating, cooling and hydro system, the building’s energy will be both economical and environmentally responsible. The condo will produce its own electricity, allowing for excess power to be sold back to the grid. By relying on their own energy source, the building will maintain its heating or cooling during blackouts.

“When Mike (Holmes) heard about our passionate commitment to combining the highest standards of luxury building with the most innovative green and clean technologies, he contacted us, eager to jump on board,” says Louie Santaguida, president and owner of Stanton Renaissance. “Mike and I are so committed to the On The Go Mimico project, and what it stands for, that we are personally buying suites in the building.”

The condo will also produce energy through a ground source geothermal system, designed to extract heat from underground in the winter for heating units and push heat back into the ground during the summer, thus lowering cooling costs.
