Green Garage Certification launches

Property and facility managers now have access to a new certification program recognizing high standards in sustainable parking facilities.

The Green Parking Council (GPC), a partner of the International Parking Institute, recently introduced Green Garage Certification—the parking industry equivalent to LEED.

“Green Garage Certification applies a holistic approach to garage performance and sustainability, evaluating facilities based on their achievement toward a menu of standards developed by experts from a range of related fields,” says John Schmid, chair of the GPC board of directors. “This program demonstrates the parking industry’s commitment to a greener future.”

The program provides an assessment tool to everyone from developers and planners to tenants and parking operators.

According to Paul Wessel, GPC’s executive director, external reviewers developed the program over several years and oversaw a beta phase involving more than 40 facilities in Canada and the U.S.

Registered Green Garage Certification assessors trained by the GPC may be asked to guide applicants through the process based on different levels of assistance.
