Condo with apple orchard planned for Calgary

Lamb Development Corp. recently revealed plans for an innovative condo development, known as The Orchard on Twelfth, in downtown Calgary. Slated for a 61,000-square-foot site, the project will feature a one-acre apple orchard containing two edible varieties of the fruit in between its two 31-storey buildings.

An Ipsos Reid survey conducted on behalf of the developer found that 90 per cent of the more than 1,000 Canadians interviewed support the idea of growing food in downtown locations. The survey also found that:

  • 93 per cent of Canadians desire more downtown green space;
  • 93 per cent of Canadians say cities must be more creative with green space;
  • Young Canadians are more inclined to live in downtown areas with more green space and walkable areas; and
  • 48 per cent of Canadians, aged 55 and older, would be willing to live downtown if it meant more green space, walkable areas and convenience.

“Condo developers must start thinking more courageously when it comes to designing downtown projects,” says Brad Lamb, CEO of Lamb Development Corp. “City living has so much to offer. Now is the time to start reinventing the way we envision downtown communities, especially the integration of shared green space.”

When shown a rendering of the new condo design, the majority of Canadians surveyed guessed that the development site would be located in Vancouver, B.C. The actual site, in Calgary, was ranked seventh. Lamb hopes that the unique project will help to position the city as a leader in imaginative design.

The community, which will be located at 3rd Street and 12th Avenue, is slated for completion in late 2017 or early 2018.
