The Peterborough Lift Lock National Historic Site in Ontario could soon be home to the Canadian Canoe Museum, according to Parks Canada. The organization hopes that the move will help to boost tourism and overall revenue.

By constructing a new museum at this location, Parks Canada and the Canadian Canoe Museum hope to consolidate two significant tourism and recreation destinations, offer enhanced opportunities for Canadian individuals and families and take advantage of the region’s diverse water-related activities and programming.

A letter of intent has been signed by both parties to formalize the collaboration. The site, located along the Trent-Severn Waterway, would allow for the construction of an 80,000-square-foot facility, including a gift shop, restaurant and meeting room.

“We are delighted to be collaborating with Parks Canada to bring the Canadian Canoe Museum and its nationally significant collection and related programs to the water,” says Ken Powell, chair of the board of directors for the Canadian Canoe Museum.

“The Peterborough Lift Lock location allows us to unite two of Peterborough’s major tourism attractions, providing water access and preserving the heritage of Peterborough as the national ‘shrine’ celebrating canoes and other related watercraft.”
