BCCA supports Site C Clean Energy Project

A joint review panel report by the federal and provincial governments on the proposed Site C Clean Energy Project (Site C) in B.C. was recently released. The report is part of a three-year environmental assessment process. The Site C project is a proposed third dam and hydroelectric generating station on the Peace River in northeast B.C.

In response to the report, the British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA) is reiterating its support for the Site C Project, recommending that the federal and provincial governments approve the project and proceed with its construction.

“Based on the findings of the joint review panel, we are confident in our belief that the federal and provincial governments should move forward with the approval of the Site C Project,” says Manley McLachlan, BCCA president. “We consider Site C a preferred option for ensuring the future energy needs of British Columbia and enabling the continued growth of B.C.’s economy.”

McLachlan notes that Site C is one of a number of major projects in the planning stages that will require skilled workers, which is a boon for the B.C. economy as well as the construction industry.

“Skilled trades jobs are valuable for Canada and skilled tradespeople contribute to the global and local economies. Site C will provide rewarding jobs to British Columbians, building an internationally competitive workforce in the longer term.”

Construction of Site C will generate approximately 10,000 direct jobs and an additional 23,000 indirect jobs. It will also contribute an estimated $3.2 billion to B.C.’s GDP.
